Hiroyuki Tanaka is a partner of the firm, admitted to practise in Japan and New York. Hiroyuki's practice areas are data protection, IT and IP. He has extensive experience advising foreign clients on Japanese data protection law. He is also familiar with global data protection regulations, including GDPR and CCPA, and helps Japanese clients with global data protection compliance by working closely with local counsels. He has extensive experience as legal counsel for various IP infringement disputes as well as disputes related to IT including software, games, and apps.
He has a long list of publication credits relating to his area of expertise, including the article "Japan enacts Amendments to the Act on the Protection of Personal Information" (the International Association of Privacy Professionals, 2020), and the books Q&A on Revised Act on the Protection of Personal Information of 2020 (Chuokeizai-sha, 2020) and EU Data Compliance for Practitioners (GDPR and e-Privacy Regulations) (Shoji Homu, 2019). He regularly serves as a speaker in various seminars and events. He was selected as one of 2019’s top five best-performing data lawyers (as selected by companies) in Nikkei’s 15th corporate legal affairs and lawyer survey of the Japanese market.He was listed as one of Japan’s best technology lawyers in the 11th edition of Best Lawyers in Japan, and one of the leading IP lawyers in Asia by Asialaw Leading Lawyers (2020). He has LLB and JD degrees from Keio University; and an LLM in competition, innovation and information law from New York University School of Law.
