Biography

Helen is a partner in the private client team at BDO LLP. With over 20 years’ experience in both personal and corporate UK tax. Helen’s focus is dealing with wealthy individuals, entrepreneurs and their businesses. She combines her commercial experience and technical knowledge to offer creative and practical advice to clients. Helen is a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

Helen’s work in matrimonial tax advisory includes expert witness reports, post-divorce support on reporting requirements and tax-efficient structures for holding family assets, and advising on restructuring family wealth in divorce, including assessment of income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax on separation and the transfer of assets located both in the UK and overseas; balancing commercial considerations and tax implications when extracting value, from businesses or investments; consideration of tax residence and domicile issues; and UK and offshore trusts.

Her work advising owner-managed businesses covers family wealth ownership structures, tax-efficient extraction of profits; understanding business structures (UK/non-UK); and exit and succession strategies.

In the areas of private equity and hedge fund markets, Helen’s expertise includes advising on fund structures (UK and abroad); holding and funding investments; tax compliance reporting (including carried interest provisions and where interests are held in an entity); and specialist advice on the taxation of fund executives.

For non-UK residents and UK-resident/non-UK-domiciled individuals, Helen offers advice on UK tax exposure and practical use of the UK remittance basis; New deemed domicile rules and capital gains tax asset rebasing; and the use of trusts and other entities in managing global wealth.
