Bommel is an expert in the field of international arbitration and heads De Brauw's construction practice. He predominantly handles complex arbitrations in the field of large scale construction projects, energy, and M&A-related matters. On the basis of his wide-ranged arbitration experience, Bommel also advises on procurement and contracting strategy for landmark construction projects under FIDIC and Logic standards and local and client specific standards.
Projects Bommel has been involved in include the set-up of the tender and contracting strategy and associated litigation for sea installed windmill parks near the Netherlands, Germany and the UK, a high flux nuclear production facility in the Netherlands, sea harbor land reclamation projects including breakwaters in the Netherlands and Qatar, several terminal projects in the Netherlands and Cyprus, chemical plants, automated storage and distribution facilities, airport including terminals, runways and automated baggage handling systems, floating offshore oil and gas production facilities in the Netherlands, the Nordics and Malaysia, oil and gas pipe projects, numerous rail way projects and road and tunnel infra structure projects in the Netherlands and Eastern Europe.
Bommel sits regularly as arbitrator in international arbitrations with a particular focus on Eastern Europe.
Bommel is a member of the SIAC Users Council in Singapore.
From 2017 – 2020 Bommel was a member of De Brauw’s management committee as Practice Head. He also was a member of the management committee of the Netherlands Arbitration Institute (NAI) until 2017. Bommel is editor and co-author of the Commentary on Dutch Arbitration Law, A Guide to the NAI Arbitration Rules and co-author of the Dutch commentary on European and Dutch Public Procurement Law.
