Greg Karpel is identified by peers as an "up and comer" in the international restructuring and insolvency market. He provides expert advice to lending syndicates, corporate boards and secured creditors.
Greg Karpel is a senior director with Alvarez & Marsal Toronto. He brings more than 13 years of accounting and financial experience to the firm, including over 10 years in turnaround consulting, interim management and corporate restructuring.
Mr Karpel has considerable experience in assisting underperforming companies to improve both operational and financial performance. He has advised a broad range of clients, including corporate boards and management, secured creditors and lending syndicates. He also has extensive expertise in conducting independent business reviews and viability assessments, as well as court appointments, acting as monitor under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). He has assisted clients across a wide range of industries, including consumer goods retail, resort hospitality and real estate, mining, oil and gas, fitness and lifestyle, restaurants, transportation logistics and manufacturing.
Most recently, Mr Karpel was engaged as part of the interim management team of Performance Sports Group (Bauer Hockey), and as CCAA monitor of Target Canada Co at Target Canada, he was involved in all financial management and reporting aspects of the wind-down and most notably, developed a comprehensive and complex solution that led to the settlement of all landlord claims which facilitated a positive outcome for the company’s plan of arrangement which was supported unanimously by over 1,200 creditors.
Mr Karpel also acted as the interim controller of a medium-sized fitness club operator providing support to the company in the following areas: financial and operational improvement, business planning and budgeting, cash and liquidity management, financial reporting and strategic planning. Other assignments include: providing treasury management consulting services to an oil and gas drilling company, court-appointed receiver and manager of the JW Marriott Rosseau Hotel, and financial adviser to the lending syndicate of an international mining company.
Mr Karpel earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. He is a chartered professional accountant (CPA, CA), chartered insolvency and restructuring professional (CIRP), and a licensed insolvency trustee (LIT). He is a member of the Turnaround Management Association (TMA) and serves on the Toronto chapter’s education committee. He was a founding member and executive on the Young Restructuring Professionals Committee of Toronto (now the TMA’s NextGen Committee).
