Doran has over 40 years of experience as an English-qualified legal practitioner based in London and Moscow. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. In April 2019 he returned to practice in London as an arbitrator.
He has dealt with oil and gas-related legal work in the UK and internationally since 1975. He was in-house at Burmah/BNOC/Britoil from 1975 to 1986, and in private practice at Allen & Overy and Dentons (including legacy firms Denton Hall, Denton Wilde Sapte and SNR Denton) from 1986 to March 2019. His clients have included IOCs, NOCs, independent explorers and producers, traders, supply and service companies. He has experience upstream, midstream and downstream.
He has been working in and with Russia and other countries of the CIS since 1991. His experience includes being senior partner of the combined Dentons Moscow office (2013-2017); managing partner of the legacy firms Denton Wilde Sapte and SNR Denton, in their Moscow offices (2001-2012); and head of office and head of corporate at Allen & Overy in Moscow (1995-1998).
At Denton Wilde Sapte during the 2000s, he managed one of the leading banking and finance legal practices in Russia, including trade and structured commodities finance, ECA financings, project financing and aviation finance.
Combining his experience in-house (oil trading contracts, lifting and terminal procedures) and in private practice (financial services regulation – including commodities trading and derivatives), he can deal with a wide range of commodities and shipping disputes.
He has extensive experience of M&A in the oil and gas sector, among others, in the UK and Russia, including some of the largest M&A deals in Russia in 2004 (tobacco) and in 2015 and 2016 (oil).
He is listed as one of Russia’s leading experts in energy and natural resources by Chambers Global (2019), Chambers Europe (2019), IFLR1000 (2019) and the Euromoney Expert Guide to Energy and Natural Resources Lawyers (2018). He is also listed as one of Russia’s top names for corporate law by Best Lawyers (2020).
He delivered a lecture titled “Russia: Rule of Law or Legal Nihilism?” at the law faculty of the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford (November 2014) and the Energy Law Institute at Queen Mary University of London (December 2018).
He was a lecturer at the annual UK Oil and Gas Law Seminar, for new entrants to the industry, organised by the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy at the University of Dundee (1999-2013). He is also a fellow of the Society of Advanced Legal Studies (FSALS) of the University of London.
Doran has a diploma in international arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators; an LLB from the University of London; a BA and an MA (philosophy, politics and economics) from the University of Oxford; and an AB (majoring in history; magna cum laude) from Dartmouth College.
He was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1973 and requalified as a solicitor in 1987. He currently practises as a barrister.
