Donna Short is an intellectual property partner and the joint leader of the trademark practice at Addisons. Donna is highly experienced in the area of intellectual property, and her work with clients involves the entire IP life cycle – from the initial innovation stage, IP protection and commercialisation, and enforcement of rights. Her areas of expertise include trademarks, copyright, domain names, designs and patents, privacy and data protection, and technology issues.
Donna’s practice covers contentious and non-contentious IP matters, and she assists clients in enforcing their rights by acting in opposition proceedings before IP Australia and in Federal Court proceedings. On the commercial side, she helps clients to identify and protect their IP, and to license and commercialise it. Increasingly clients require assistance with IP licensing and commercialisation projects involving a cross-border element. She also carries out advertising compliance reviews for advertising campaigns.
Donna has extensive experience in the area of trademarks, and her expertise includes major rebranding projects; managing global trademark portfolios, including enforcement of trademark rights in Australia and overseas; and licensing and sponsorship arrangements.
Donna’s clients include multinational food and beverage companies, large Australian financial institutions and insurers, biotechnology and health entities, and technology companies. She is frequently recognised as a leader in her field, having been consistently ranked in Chambers Global, Chambers Asia Pacific, IP Stars Australia, The Legal 500: Asia Pacific and others in recent years. In 2020, Donna was ranked in the WTR 1000 guide to the world’s leading trademark professionals for prosecution and strategy. The guide states: “Short is simply outstanding with her superb service orientation and responsiveness.”
