Biography

Dong-Seok (Johan) Oh is a Senior Partner at KL Partners. He focuses on International Arbitration, has been involved in more than 150 arbitrations as counsel and arbitrator, and is widely acknowledged as a specialist in construction, infrastructure projects, offshore, shipbuilding, and energy disputes.

Johan’s experience in international arbitration and cross-border litigation spans across more than 2 decades and he has been involved in disputes across the globe, and in particular, in South East Asia, South Asia, Middle East, and Africa. Johan was previously as a Senior Partner with Kim & Chang’s International Arbitration practice and before that served as one of the youngest General Counsel to Hyundai Heavy Industries ever. During that time, he was involved in mandates involving various outbound projects in industries such as shipbuilding, offshore, general construction, industrial and chemical processing, oil and gas, infrastructure, PPP, and renewables.

Johan has represented clients under a wide array of institutional rules, including the rules of the ICC, AAA-ICDR, LCIA, HKIAC, SIAC, CIETAC, ZCC, and KCAB International. More recently, he finds himself involved in mostly construction (particularly, offshore, roadways, and power plants) and post-M&A disputes, and occasionally in disputes relating to corporate governance, infrastructure, and state-concessions. As a testament to his reputation in the international arbitration community, most of Johan’s client are repeat clients and he continues to enjoy back-to-back mandates.

Prior to entering private practice, Johan served with the Korean judiciary as a judge in the Suwon District Court. He is a member of the Korean Bar Association (1996), the New York Bar Association (2007), IAI (International Arbitration Institute), and IPBA (Inter-Pacific Bar Association). Johan accepts appointment as arbitrator in international arbitrations from time to time.
