Biography

David Kim is a partner (senior foreign attorney) in Lee & Ko’s international dispute resolution practice group, and is highly regarded for his expertise and extensive experience in assisting clients with a broad range of international arbitration matters.

David’s experience in international arbitration matters includes acting as legal counsel for many different clients in various arbitration cases before the ICC, SIAC, ICSID, HKIAC, KCAB, and LCIA, and in ad hoc arbitrations under the UNCITRAL rules. He has represented multinational corporations, government entities, defence contractors and high-profile individuals in numerous commercial disputes related to construction, shipping, military contracts, energy and natural resources, telecommunications, and investor-state matters.

Mr Kim has also served as an adjunct professor at the Judicial Research and Training Institute of the Supreme Court of Korea and a member of the international arbitration council of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB). He is a former representative of the Asia chapter of the regional coordinating committee of the ICC young arbitrators’ forum and is the former co-coordinator for the young ICCA mentorship programme. 

David has been recognised as a leading practitioner by Chambers Asia Pacific, which describes him as someone whose "advocacy is logical, persuasive and tempered" and who "will go the extra mile to take care of his clients". David is also ranked as a “future star” in Benchmark Litigation Asia Pacific 2018 and was named as an “outstanding young partner” in Chambers Asia Pacific 2016. Most recently, David was named "next generation leader in arbitration" by the KCAB, the first time such a distinction was awarded by the KCAB.

David is admitted to practise in Alberta, Canada and speaks English and Korean.

Biography

David Kim is a partner (senior foreign attorney) in Lee & Ko's international dispute resolution practice group, and the co-chair of the firm’s international construction dispute resolution practice group. David is highly regarded for his expertise and extensive experience in assisting clients with a broad range of international arbitration matters.

David's experience in international arbitration matters includes acting as legal counsel for many different clients in various arbitration cases before the ICC, SIAC, ICSID, HKIAC, KCAB and LCIA, and in ad hoc arbitrations under the UNCITRAL rules. He has represented multinational corporations, government entities, defence contractors and high-profile individuals in numerous commercial disputes related to construction; shipping; military contracts; energy and natural resources; telecoms; and investor-state matters.

Examples of David’s expertise in international arbitration include representing large Korean companies in high value, complex construction disputes in the Middle East and Asia; representing state-owned entities in disputes related to defence procurement contracts (including projectiles, helicopters and submarines); defending South Korea in a $700 million investor-state dispute against Elliott Associates LP; and representing a leading steel manufacturing company (Austria) in a dispute arising from a steel melting plant in South Korea.

David has also served as an adjunct professor at the Judicial Research and Training Institute of the Supreme Court of Korea. He is a member of the international arbitration council of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB). He has taught as a sessional lecturer at the KCAB, and is also on its panel list of arbitrators.

He is a former representative of the Asia chapter of the regional coordinating committee of the ICC Young Arbitrators' Forum, and the former co-coordinator for the Young ICCA mentorship programme.
