Dr Christian W Konrad is the founding partner of an international arbitration law firm with its headquarters in Vienna. His practice covers inter-state, investment and commercial disputes. He is an Austrian Rechtsanwalt, solicitor of England and Wales, and an advokat in the Slovak and Czech Republics. Christian is a chartered arbitrator (CArb) and frequently serves in this role; he also acts as a legal expert and counsel in proceedings under the auspices of all major arbitral institutions. He was educated at King’s College London and the University of Vienna.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ESTABLISH YOUR OWN FIRM?
From the beginning of my career, I had the privilege to learn from and practise with outstanding individuals and true experts in the field of international arbitration. As a major part of my practice is dedicated to arbitrator’s work, the ever-increasing concern and reality of conflicts was a strong motivator for establishing my own firm.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS COUNSEL IN INVESTMENT ARBITRATIONS?
The interplay between politics and business, as well as the legal concepts behind it.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST INTERESTING CASE TO DATE, AND WHY?
All our cases are fascinating in their own right.
HOW DOES KONRAD PARTNERS STAND-OUT FROM COMPETITORS IN THE MARKET?
This is a question that should be addressed to our clients. From the feedback and recognition that we have received over the years, I would single out our strong service commitment to our clients and the success rate in our representation.
OUT OF COMMERCIAL ARBITRATIONS AND INVESTOR-STATE CASES, WHICH DO YOU PREFER AND WHY?
I am equally passionate about both cases and have no particular preference for either one.
WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS?
Constancy of purpose, passion in our work and a great team of lawyers.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU SEE YOUR PRACTICE EVOLVING OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
Our firm celebrates its 10-year anniversary this year. We will continue to invest in our team, attract top talents and stay on top of emerging technology trends. We will further ensure our global presence, strengthen our relationships and continue delivering premier services to our clients.
YOUR CAREER HAS BEEN AN ILLUSTRIOUS ONE TO DATE. WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACHIEVE?
We are currently working on several ADR projects in troubled areas of the world, which will make a difference in the peaceful resolution of serious conflicts. I would like to see those projects to come to fruition in the not-too-distant future.
