Christian Girod cements his place as a go-to figure in the Swiss market for complex international insurance disputes.

Biography

Christian Girod is a Partner in Schellenberg Wittmer's Dispute Resolution Group as well as its Private Wealth Group in Geneva. His main areas of practice are commercial, banking and insurance litigation, as well as estate and trust disputes.

Christian's practice is almost exclusively devoted to international matters and covers a range of issues, including pre-litigation strategic advice and representation of parties in cases related to insurance, private banking disputes, and estate and trusts disputes.

Some examples of Christian's expertise include representation of an insurance broker sued by a former client in relation to a complex insurance scheme; a forwarding agent in proceedings brought by one of its customers seeking damages resulting from the loss of gold bars during the air transport organised by the client; and insurers in relation to claims resulting from an alleged robbery of precious jewels which turns out to be fraudulent claims.

Christian is a member of several professional associations, such as the International Association of Lawyers and the Swiss Arbitration Association.

Christian graduated from the School of Law of the University of Geneva in 1982 and was admitted to the Swiss Bar in 1985. He earned a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1986. Christian joined Schellenberg Wittmer in 1986 and has been a partner since 1994.

Some examples of Christian's expertise in litigation include: representation of a Swiss Foundation as defendant in relation to estates opened in 1928 and 1968 which involve artworks and other assets confiscated by the  Nazis in  the  1930s and  are  governed by the laws of different states; representation of a trustee in proceedings for injunctive relief before the Geneva courts, in relation to estate claims of the petitioners under Monegasque law; and representation of a bank in proceedings brought by former customers trying to have the bank be held liable for the losses caused by an external independent asset manager.

Christian is an SBA-certified specialist in inheritance law, a STEP-certified trust and estate practitioner, and a member of several professional associations, such as the International Association of Lawyers, the Swiss Arbitration Association and the Société Romande des Avocats Spécialistes en Droit des Successions.
