Christian Bouckaert enjoys “a very good reputation for his work handling severe aircraft accidents” say peers, who also highlight his “extensive knowledge of aviation-related product liability claims”.

Biography

Christian Bouckaert is the lead partner of Kennedys’ Paris office.

Christian has more than four decades of experience as a commercial litigator, and is specialised, inter alia, in (re)insurance, industrial risk and product liability disputes relating to a host of sectors, especially the aviation and aerospace industries.

This has led Christian to be instructed in a significant proportion of the largest aviation and aerospace disputes to arise in France, or governed by French law.

Examples of his work include disputes relating to two successive crashes of Eurocopter helicopters (now Airbus Helicopters) as they were servicing offshore rigs in the North Sea; a dispute relating to the failure of hydraulic pumps integrated in Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft, and the ensuing risk of large-scale retrofits; the crash of two helicopters in South America during the production of a television show; and a dispute regarding the explosion of the Ariane V rocket during its inaugural flight.

Christian and Nicolas Bouckaert, who jointly lead the Paris office’s aerospace product liability practice, currently represent a manufacturer in the context of a product liability dispute revolving around the total loss of an A380 engine.

Christian is regularly appointed as arbitrator and has often been instructed to act as expert on French law before foreign courts (including England and the US).

Christian is the general secretary of the International Insurance Law Association (AIDA). He is also a member of the French Arbitration Association (AFA), the International Association of Claim Professionals (IACP) and the French Reinsurance and Insurance Arbitration Centre (CEFAREA).

He is a former board member of the reinsurer Paris Re and the American Arbitration Association (AAA), as well as the vice chair of the European leadership council at the Defense Research Institute (DRI).
