Bastien Thomas is praised emphatically by peers as "probably the best merger control and state aid specialist of his generation". He "knows everything" and is "a lawyer you want in your team", add interviewees.

Biography

Bastien Thomas is a partner in the Paris-based competition practice of Racine, one of the main independent French business law firms with over 190 lawyers acting as advisers, litigators and arbitrators in all business-related areas (M&A, competition, real estate, labour, commercial, IP, tax, restructuring and insolvency).

Bastien practised in an international law firm before joining Racine as a partner. He has over 13 years of experience in competition law to his credit.

He specialises in antitrust (anticompetitive agreements and abuse of dominant position) and merger control both at French and EU levels. Bastien is also highly experienced in state aid.

Focusing his expertise on advising French and international companies on complex and challenging antitrust and merger control issues, Bastien has acquired extensive experience in and knowledge of very specific sectors such as agri-food, transportation and automotive, biotechnology, media and financial institutions. He represents clients before French and EU competition authorities and courts.

Well recognised in his fields of expertise, Bastien is the author of several papers on competition law and is notably a regular contributor to the French quarterly review Concurrences.

In addition to being an active member of the competition law practitioners’ community as a member of the APDC (French competition practitioners association), the AFEC (French association studying competition law) and the ASAE (state aids monitoring association), Bastien is a lecturer in European and international competition law for the Panthéon-Sorbonne University, Columbia University and Sciences Po Master 2 academic partnership.

Holding an MBA from Essec Business School and a master’s in European business law from Panthéon-Assas University, Bastien’s native language is French and he speaks English fluently.
