The force behind germination and growth of patent jurisprudence in India from a state of near dormancy, Archana Shanker is a senior partner at Anand and Anand where she leads its patent and design practice. The holder of prestigious Asia Women In Business Law Award for 2019 by Euromoney Legal Media Group, Ms Shanker is a part of the advisory board for IAM’s first ever Women in Patents event. She advises the Government of India on IP matters with same assiduity with which she is continuously shaping the patent jurisprudence of the country.
Behind her is 29 years of dedicated practice in prosecution, litigation and opposition across industries from pharmaceuticals to life sciences, software, ICT, telecom, mechanics, electronics and biodiversity. Drawing on her unparalleled experience, Ms Shanker has penned the Halsbury's Laws of India chapter on patent besides being a contributor to several international publications, like MIP, Asia IP law, LSIPR etc.
Not just India, she advises clients on protection and prosecution in jurisdictions like the United States, Europe and Japan. She is the first woman president of Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys, India section; vice president, North India for Licensing Executives Society International besides a member of various international bodies like Asian Patent Attorneys Association and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property.
It is for her innovative approach and unmatched art of handling complex matters that she has been bestowed with the Asia Women In Business Law Award for 2019 from Euromoney Legal Media Group and the Legal Era 6th International IP Conclave and Awards 2019 for Women. She has received accolades such as top “women in business law” in patents (2016–2019, Expert Guides), “top 250 women IP professionals” (2016–2019, MIP), “IP star” for patents, (2015–2019, MIP) and “spotlight for life sciences” in India (2016–2018, Chambers Asia Pacific).
