In addition to graduating in law, he has a background in marine engineering and completed the Grotius specialisation training in general administrative law. He has more than 20 years of experience as an attorney-at-law and six years’ experience in various EHS leadership positions with General Electric before admission to the bar. Mr Gaastra is a member of the general committee of the Entrepreneurs Association Region of Amsterdam with specific responsibility for the interests of the industry in relation to spatial planning and the environment in the Metropole Region Amsterdam (MRA). He was treasurer of the supervisory committee of the National Bar in the District of North Holland. He regularly speaks on environmental law, and has published in the Journal for Environment & Law, the Waste Products Journal and others.
