US based law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati LLP has announced that it is extending its client offering in Europe with the opening of an office in Brussels.
The new office, which is set to launch in October, will be led by competition partner Michael Rosenthal, who was previously the managing partner of Hunton & Williams’ Brussels office. He will be joined by former Shearman & Sterling partner Götz Drauz.
Rosenthal advises clients on all aspects of EU and German competition law. He has advised clients before the European Commission and Germany’s Federal Cartel Office. Recent engagements include acting for Chevron in relation to the sale of its business in Europe and representing leading brands such as K+S and Duravit.
Commenting on the move, Rosenthal says “Our new US colleagues have done a phenomenal job creating a presence in Brussels from their desks in Washington and California.” He adds: “I am very grateful to Hunton & Williams, which has been a wonderful home for over five years and I will miss my friends there. But opening Wilson Sonsini’s first European office is a unique opportunity I couldn't pass on.”
Drauz has represented companies in major merger and cartel investigations in a wide range of industries including aviation, consumer products, chemicals, defence, energy, rail transport, software and telecommunications. Prior to entering private practice, he served for 25 years at the European Commission.
Trevor Soames at Shearman & Sterling LLP in Brussels says: “Götz has joined his long-standing friend, Michael Rosenthal, in setting up Wilson Sonsini’s Brussels office. I wish them well. It was a pleasure working with Götz whilst we were at Howrey together and I hope that this next phase of his career proves successful.”
CEO of Wilson Sonsini Steve Bochner, said that the firm “couldn’t have asked for a finer team” to lead their efforts in Europe. “They are highly accomplished attorneys whose talents and experience mesh extraordinarily well with the firm's thriving M&A and antitrust practices. It is with great pride that we welcome them to the firm.”
Both lawyers feature in The International Who’s Who of Competition Lawyers & Economists.
