He joins from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP where he was a lawyer in the Amsterdam office focusing on cross-border patent litigation.
Van Woortman specialises in intellectual property with particular expertise in the life sciences sector, handling patent and technology matters regarding medical devices and pharmaceuticals. He also has experience in the TMT sector, acting in matters regarding telecommunication equipment, computers and software.
He joins as a partner in the IP department and is head of the life sciences practice group. He says of his new firm "Simmons & Simmons has the most impressive life science practice in France, serving literally all the major companies in the field of life sciences. In Germany, the IP practice is headed by one of my former colleagues at Freshfields, and we have been involved in parallel matters for Vanderlande Industries and other matters".
Van Woortman has represented clients such as Vanderlande, Microsoft, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks. When asked about some of his most recent major dealings, he spoke of a case acting for AS Watson. "We were successful in proceedings at the EPO's Technical Board of Appeal, and we obtained a partial revocation and substantial limitation of a patent in the name of Numico. We continue to represent AS Watson in the appeal proceedings that are pending before the Dutch court".
This year, he also successfully represented communications company Ericsson in the matter of Ericsson and KPN vs High Point and Microsoft in the successful revocation of a patent in the name of Arendi Holding.
