Biography

Alex Bevan is a partner in Shearman & Sterling’s international arbitration practice and head of the firm’s Abu Dhabi office. He leads the firm’s construction practice. He is also a member of Shearman & Sterling’s nine-member policy committee.

Alex advises and represents companies and state-owned entities in complex international proceedings under the arbitration rules of the ICC, LCIA, HKIAC, ICSID, LMAA and in ad hoc arbitrations (including under the UNCITRAL arbitration rules). His practice focuses on construction and development projects, investments, acquisitions and joint venture disputes. His industry experience notably includes multiple matters in the infrastructure, power, oil and gas and telecoms sectors. He also regularly acts as arbitrator.

Alex has extensive experience in international arbitrations related to construction and engineering projects, including civil infrastructure (hospitals, airports and railways), energy (oil and gas, nuclear, power and renewables), real estate and urban development, industrial plants and shipbuilding. His practice includes the full spectrum of issues arising in engineering and construction disputes, such as delay claims, defective works, change orders and cost variations, unforeseen circumstances and many others.

Alex has been distinguished in leading directories as a “go-to guy for major international arbitrations”, a “powerful advocate” and “a clinical cross-examiner” with “invaluable strategic thinking”.
