WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING IN RESTRUCTURING AND FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS?

Every restructuring situation is different, with unique financial, legal, commercial, operational and stakeholder challenges. I enjoy finding solutions to highly complex problems and charting and navigating a pathway which preserves and enhances value out of crisis and distressed situations.

WHAT IS FTI’S UNIQUE SELLING POINT WHEN IT COMES TO ITS RESTRUCTURING CAPABILITIES?

FTI is the only independent adviser in the market that provides strategic financial advice, while at the same time possessing the scale and expertise to deliver and implement high-quality financial due diligence, business transformation, interim management, contingency planning, insolvency and tax structuring.

HAS THE SHADOW OF THE FINANCIAL CRISIS FINALLY RECEDED?

The shadow of the financial crisis has long since receded, but the shadow of the next cycle is on the horizon.

TO WHAT EXTENT ARE SCHEMES OF ARRANGEMENT THE MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD FOR STAKEHOLDERS TO RECOVER THEIR INVESTMENTS?

Schemes of arrangement remain a highly effective, well-understood and accepted mechanism for the implementation of financial restructurings across Europe. But they are nothing more than an implementation tool.

HOW HAS NEW TECHNOLOGY AFFECTED THE RESTRUCTURING AND INSOLVENCY SPACE?

Technological change is a critical driver in corporate restructurings and insolvency. However, the profession itself has been slow to move and react to technological changes.

WHEN A CLIENT COMES TO YOU WITH A “CRISIS SITUATION”, WHAT ARE THE FIRST STEPS THAT YOU TAKE TO ENSURE THEIR INTERESTS ARE PROTECTED?

Get a good lawyer. Understand your position. Get a grip of your cash. Develop a realistic and robust business plan. Strategically manage your stakeholder communication.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING PRACTITIONERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO SUCCEED IN THIS SPACE?

Restructuring typically encompasses many issues, so be broad and well-rounded. To be a truly successful trusted adviser, you need to have a good understanding of valuation, M&A, equity markets, debt financing, liquidity management, insolvency, business planning, operational improvement, etc. If you have a good understanding of all these areas, you can become an expert in restructuring.

WHAT DOES BREXIT MEAN FOR LONDON’S REPUTATION AS THE FINANCIAL HUB OF EUROPE?

From a geographic, legal and language perspective, London is and will remain a key jurisdiction for the corporate and financial markets. While Brexit will inevitably impact its reputation as the financial hub of Europe, I expect London to remain the centre of gravity for the European restructuring market over the next 10 years.
