Biography:

Who's Who Legal Arbitration: Future Leaders - Partners

Michael Walbert is an independent dispute resolution and corporate/M&A practitioner based in Vienna. He started his career in the dispute resolution department of an international law firm's Vienna office, where he gained vast experience in both arbitral proceedings administered by international institutions, including the ICC and VIAC, as well as in ad hoc arbitral proceedings. He then joined an Austria-based international law firm, where he focused his practice on corporate law and M&A transactions for several years. Having gained extensive experience in both dispute resolution and transactions, resolution of post-M&A disputes, primarily in arbitral proceedings, has developed as his core specialisation. Michael also handles commercial and corporate disputes before Austrian courts, in particular in relation to management liability and D&O insurance.

He regularly speaks and publishes on dispute resolution topics with a particular focus on corporate and transaction disputes. Recently, he co-authored the article "Efficient and Expeditious Dispute Resolution In M&A Transactions", published in the 2017 edition of the Austrian Yearbook on International Arbitration.

Michael is an active member of the Austrian Arbitration Association (Arb|Aut), the German Institution of Arbitration (DIS), the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA), the International Bar Association (IBA) and the International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA).

He obtained his first law degree and his Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Vienna. Michael wrote his doctoral thesis on interim and conservatory measures issued by arbitral tribunals. In 2002 he participated in the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Michael is also a graduate of the University of Virginia (LLM). He speaks German and English.

WWL says: Michael Walbert is "a talented international arbitration lawyer" who, according to peers, "has shown outstanding profundity in the analytical work" relating to post-M&A disputes.
