Who's Who Legal Arbitration: Future Leaders - Non-partners

James Menz is deputy secretary general and head of case management at the German Institution of Arbitration (DIS) in Cologne/Berlin. The DIS is one of the leading international institutions for the resolution of commercial disputes. James oversees the administration of hundreds of arbitration and ADR proceedings annually, and is a member of the drafting committee for the revised 2018 DIS Arbitration Rules.

Prior to joining the DIS, James practised international arbitration, complex litigations and competition law at Schellenberg Wittmer in Zurich and Shearman & Sterling in New York. He has extensive experience acting as counsel in arbitrations under a variety of applicable laws and institutional rules, with particular expertise in construction and infrastructure projects, joint venture, distribution and sales contracts, as well as disputes in the energy, biotech and pharmaceutical industries. James has also served as arbitrator and legal secretary to arbitral tribunals.

A bilingual German-American dual citizen, James received his BA summa cum laude from St Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota (2000) and his MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2001). He graduated with highest honours from the George Washington University law school (JD 2005) and is admitted to the New York Bar.

James regularly publishes and speaks on issues in international commercial arbitration. He is an alumnus of the Swiss Arbitration Academy and a graduate of the Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy’s workshop on questioning of expert witnesses. James is a vice-chair of the ABA Section of International Law’s international arbitration committee, and a member of major professional associations including ASA, LCIA and ICCA.

WWL says: James Menz is “truly outstanding” and “one to watch”, according to peers, who praise his “pragmatic, straight-to-the-issue style” when acting as counsel in complex international arbitration matters.
