Biography:

Who's Who Legal Mediation

Jane Player, based in the UK, works in a number of jurisdictions. Practising as a mediator for over 15 years as an independent who also mediates for institutions such as In Place of Strife, CEDR, ICC and SIMC, Jane has a varied practice ranging from technology and IP sectors to general commercial cases involving joint ventures, consortia and multiparty. Consistently ranked in all the legal directories, Jane was the winner of the Corporate Livewire 2015 Legal Award for Commercial Mediator of the Year – UK. Jane also won the International Law Office (ILO) Client Choice Award 2012 in the litigation category for the UK.

Jane is particularly recommended for mediations where there are strong personalities within the parties’ groups and where there may be some cynicism towards the potential for dispute resolution through mediation. She has an engaging style and is often praised for her proactive approach.

Comments include, “Lawyers and clients alike enjoy appointing Jane ... she has the right mix of intellectual ability and commercial awareness”. She is further described as “robust but in a gently persuasive way”, “full of energy and tries every angle to find a solution for the parties” and “committed”. Sources also state, “Despite being a lawyer, Jane was good at steering clear of the law and ensuring that the clients’ commercial interests were best served on the day”, and “Jane’s proactivity and people skills were key in enabling the parties to reach agreement.”

Jane also actively promotes “in life” mediation (and has been appointed as an “in life” mediator), which is a new trend in English dispute resolution. The use of mediation techniques earlier in the business relationship, using mediators working with parties to help them maintain their commitment to the venture as opposed to focusing on rights and obligations once things go wrong, has proved very successful. This approach supports businesses in their desire to form long-term strategic relationships.

WWL says: Jane Player is “highly recommended, particularly in the IP field” and is recognised for her creative approach to disputes, borne out of significant cross-border mediation experience.
