Who's Who Legal Competition: Future Leaders - Non Partners

Dr Daniel J Zimmer is counsel in the Düsseldorf office of Hengeler Mueller and part of the firm’s competition team. He advises both German and international clients on competition law issues with a special focus on cartel proceedings, competition law compliance and private antitrust enforcement.

Most recently, Daniel assisted MAN in the EU Commission's investigation and subsequent settlement in the Trucks case. While the EU Commission imposed the highest ever antitrust fine of €2.93 billion, Daniel helped secure full immunity from fines for MAN as leniency applicant. He is currently advising MAN in the defence of potential antitrust damage claims in relation to the Trucks case.

Daniel also represented, inter alia, a German company in the landmark Pfleiderer case before the European Court of Justice regarding the access to leniency statements by potential cartel damages claimants. He also acts as defence counsel, in both court cases and out-of-court negotiations, and a number of other cartel damage claim proceedings. In addition, he is involved in other competition-related litigation und settlement negotiations. His clients include companies from the automotive, energy and manufacturing sectors.

Daniel was admitted to the Bar and joined Hengeler Mueller in 2008. He became counsel in 2014. After legal studies at the universities of Bochum and Geneva, Daniel completed an LLM programme as Fulbright scholar at Duke University School of Law and a doctoral thesis at the University of Bonn, focusing on conflict of laws issues in international cartel damages claims. He is author of various publications in English and German on competition and energy law issues.

WWL says: Daniel Zimmer is a top name thanks to his “impeccable expertise in complex cartel damages litigation”. Sources consider him “a very bright and effective lawyer” who is “certainly on track to becoming a leading figure in Germany”.
