Roy Herrera joined Arias & Muñoz’s Costa Rica office in 2005 and became a partner in 2008. He currently heads the firm’s dispute resolution department, focusing on complex litigation. Roy has also developed a strong reputation for his legal and advocacy skills, creativity in resolving legal issues, and ability to handle multi-jurisdictional litigation involving multiple practice areas. His fields of expertise include: litigation, arbitration, banking, finance, commercial law, public law, bankruptcy and real estate.
His representative matters include the following: representing a real estate developer in a US$20 million early foreclosure in which a creditor alleged serious breach of contract demanding early payment; achieving an out-of-court settlement between four financial institutions and a debtor, which entailed restructuring a US$75 million syndicated loan; and reaching a multimillion-dollar settlement between foreign plaintiffs and an international trust and escrow company.
Roy actively participates in several prominent organisations. His roles include: president of the board of directors at the ICC, Costa Rica chapter; arbitrator at the International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration of the Costa Rica American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM); arbitrator at the Center for Conciliation and Arbitration of the Costa Rican Chamber of Commerce; founder of the Spanish Arbitration Club, Costa Rica chapter; member of the American Association of Private International Law; and member of the International Bar Association.
