Who's Who Legal Competition: Lawyers

Joanne is a partner in the ByrneWallace corporate team and heads the firm's EU, competition and regulated markets group. She has extensive experience in EU and competition law and particularly in the healthcare, construction, energy, telecommunications, agri-food, retail/consumer and aviation sectors. 

Joanne regularly advises on merger control, including successfully advising on Panda Waste's acquisition of Greenstar, Ireland’s most recent Phase 2 merger investigation. She advises on notifications at EU and Irish level in the retail, energy and agri-foods sectors. Joanne has advised on investigations by and complaints to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and the European Commission and has advised Government Departments on successfully obtaining State aid approval.

On the regulatory side, Joanne advises Irish and International clients on regulated markets such as energy and telecommunications including coordinating EU-wide compliance for telecommunications companies and advising on regulatory aspects of transactional and litigation.  

Joanne has a particular interest in the challenges presented by specialist litigation in the competition law sphere. She advised the European Commission in relation to its landmark intervention on crisis cartels in the Irish High Court in the Competition Authority v The Beef Industry Development Society (BIDS). Joanne also led the EU law team in the Supreme Court in Dellway & Ors v National Asset Management Agency & Ors. Most recently Joanne acted for an association of 37 Litigants in a challenge against the HSE on state aid, public procurement and competition grounds in Home Care Plus & Ors v HSE

Joanne has an LLB in law and European law/international energy law from the University of Nottingham and an LLM in European Legal Studies from the College of Europe (Bruges). She is vice-president and former chair of the Irish Society of European Law (ISEL), and chairs the ISEL's procurement law forum. Joanne also lectures and publishes regularly in the EU and competition law sphere.

Joanne Finn is ranked as a leading individual in Chambers Europe (2016) and is recommended in The Legal 500 EMEA (2016).
