Alex MacFarlane regularly acts for debtor corporations, financial institutions, court-appointed monitors and receivers, creditors' committees and trustees in bankruptcy. He has extensive expertise in cross-border restructurings and insolvency and restructuring proceedings under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, and the Winding-Up and Restructuring Act. He is a frequent speaker at industry events including the Annual Review of Insolvency Law, as well as those held by the American Bar Association, the Risk Management Association and the Law Society of Upper Canada. Alex was the past chair of the Ontario Bar Association’s insolvency law section; he was also director of the Turnaround Management Association (Chicago) and past vice president of the Toronto chapter. He is a member of the Canadian Insolvency Foundation; the Insolvency Institute of Canada; the American Bankruptcy Institute; the Turnaround Management Association; and INSOL International. In addition to his recognition by Who's Who Legal, Alex has been ranked by Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business since 2009, and by Chambers Canada since its 2015 launch. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1988.
