Cristina Massa, partner at González Calvillo, S.C., leads the firm’s antitrust and competition practice group and contributes her experience to other areas, particularly those involving regulated sectors (energy, telecomm) and lobbying.
Ms Massa has 20 years’ experience in Mexico and abroad, both in the public and private sectors, in areas ranging from corporate transactions and capital markets, to economic and administrative law, including antitrust. She is admitted to practice in Mexico and New York. She also has a developed practice in regulated sectors (energy, telecomm), including compliance and government affairs. She is a former commissioner of the Mexican Antitrust Commission.
Cristina Massa has obtained in-depth understanding of competition and antitrust matters affecting private companies after having handled and decided cases as a regulator, participated in the design and implementation of public policies as a public servant, acted as a consultant, and having had direct exposure to domestic and multi-jurisdictional transactional experience.
As head of GC’s antitrust and competition practice, Ms Massa regularly provides legal counsel and representation to major public and private companies and investment funds participating in the Mexican market. She leads the team that handles merger control procedures, design and implementation of strategy, compliance and training programs for major companies, lobbying, and advice and representation of clients in investigation proceedings (cartel behavior, abuse of dominance and barriers to entry, including applications to the leniency programme).
Ms Massa has a law degree with highest honours (mención honorífica) from the Mexico Autonomous Institute of Technology (ITAM) and a master's degree (LLM) from Harvard Law School, where she attended as a Fulbright scholar.
Ms Massa has regularly taught courses both at undergrad and graduate levels related to her areas of expertise since 2003 at ITAM, CIDE and IPADE. She is member of the New York Bar (first department), American Bar Association, a non-governmental adviser (NGA) to Cofece within the International Competition Network (ICN), sits on the advisory board of the Programa Interdisciplinario de Regulación y Competencia Económica (PIRCE - a competition and regulation think tank), and is a board member of the Center for US and Mexican Law at the University of Houston and Abogadas MX.
