Who's Who Legal Energy

Darrell R Johnson is the senior foreign legal counsel at SSEK Legal Consultants, one of the largest and most highly regarded corporate law firms in Indonesia. He has been with SSEK since the firm’s founding in 1992 and has resided and practiced in Indonesia for 40 years. Mr Johnson is a supervising adviser of SSEK’s energy and natural resources practice and is widely recognised as one of the leading practitioners in Indonesia.

Mr Johnson has been extensively involved in large and highly complex transactions in the upstream and downstream oil and gas sectors and the private power and mining industries. His expertise also includes Indonesian finance, banking and capital markets law, foreign investment, mergers and acquisitions, insurance law, and corporate and commercial law.

Mr Johnson has been active in the representation of a major US oil company in coal-bed methane projects with Indonesia’s largest coal-bed methane company, and has represented major oil companies active in Indonesia, including ExxonMobil, Total, British Petroleum, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, Anadarko, Maxus, Vico, Hess Corporation and others.

Representative engagements include advising Indonesia’s state-owned oil and gas company on the acquisition of a stake in a petrochemical company, counselling Mobil Cepu on regulatory and land-related issues related to a multimillion-dollar oil and gas project in Java, and advising Exxon Natuna on regulatory issues pertaining to a multibillion-dollar oil and gas development.

Mr Johnson advises Energy Development Corporation, one of the largest producers of geothermal energy in the world, on its ongoing geothermal developments in Indonesia, and he acted for the developer of the Wayang Windu geothermal project in Java.

Mr Johnson is a member of the American Bar Association (sections of international law and practice; business law; law and practice management; administrative law; real estate property law; intellectual property law), the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (sections of banking law and business organisations), and the International Bar Association (committees on banking law; business organisations; issues and trading in securities; multinationals and foreign investment policy; international franchising). Mr Johnson is on the board of advisers of the International and Comparative Law Centre of the Southwestern Legal Foundation, and is a member of the Panel of Arbitrators at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre and the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration. In 1997, Mr Johnson was selected as a fellow of the American Bar Association and as a founding member of the International Insolvency Institute, the only Indonesian resident attorney to be so honoured.  

Mr Johnson is a member of the board of governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia.
