Paul is called to the Singapore and English Bars and is admitted before the courts of the Dubai International Financial Centre. He is regularly instructed as lead counsel before international commercial and investment arbitral tribunals, the Singapore International Commercial Court and at the highest levels of the Singapore courts. He accepts appointments as arbitrator.
He commands praise for his “wide knowledge”, “powerful intellect” and “extraordinary analytical discipline”; and is described as “exceptionally bright” in The Legal 500, and in Chambers & Partners (Asia-Pacific and Global) as “a rising star”, “really excellent”, “highly intelligent”, and “as good as anybody I’d worked with in Singapore.” In 2016, Paul was named “Disputes Star of the Year - Singapore” by Asialaw.
He is also co-author of the forthcoming edition of Mustill & Boyd’s treatise on commercial and investment arbitration.
His experience includes a significant placement with Essex Court Chambers (as a Singapore Academy of Law scholar), and a foreign stagiaire stint with Lalive in Geneva.
He holds or has held appointment as an expert to the Singapore delegation to the UNCITRAL’s working group on arbitration, the pro-tem treasurer of the International Law Association (Singapore), a committee member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Singapore), and representative for the Asia-Pacific and Australasian region of the Young International Arbitration Group. He is an honorary member of the Commercial Bar and Chancery Bar of London.
Prior to practice, Paul clerked for the Supreme Court of Singapore. He also holds first-class degrees from the National University of Singapore and the University of Oxford.
WWL says: Paul Tan is "very sharp, easy to work with, grasps issues quickly and has his finger on the pulse of every evolution in the field in Singapore".
