Nils Eliasson is a partner in Shearman & Sterling’s international arbitration group. He acts as counsel or arbitrator in commercial and investment treaty disputes, both institutional (HKIAC, ICC, SIAC, LCIA, CIETAC, VIAC, DIS, SCC), and ad hoc under UNCITRAL arbitration rules.

Nils Eliasson has extensive experience in disputes related to the oil and gas, power (conventional and nuclear), infrastructure, construction and engineering, telecommunications, and real estate sectors, as well as joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, and licencing disputes. He handles both commercial arbitrations and investment treaty arbitrations under bilateral investment treaties or the Energy Charter Treaty.

Trained in Sweden, Nils Eliasson has been based in Hong Kong and China for the past seven years and represents a number of Chinese state-owned enterprises and private companies. He is a member of the HKIAC council, the decision-making and governing body of the HKIAC, and a member of the HKIAC proceedings committee. He also is a member of the ICC commission on arbitration and ADR and of various ICC task forces.

Nils Eliasson has written and spoken extensively on a variety of topics, in particular investment in China and the Chinese investment treaty programme. He has also served as an associated expert in the international trade law division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs (then functioning as the secretariat of the UNCITRAL).

Nils Eliasson holds a PhD and a Master of Laws from the University of Lund, as well as a certificate in comparative and international law from the University of Utrecht. Admitted in Hong Kong and Sweden, he speaks Swedish, English and German.

WWL says: Nils Eliasson is a "charming, impressive character" who "stands out for his investor-state expertise".
