Stephen Anway is co-head of investment arbitration at Squire Patton Boggs, a partner in its world-ranked international dispute resolution group and a member of its global board. He is also an adjunct professor of law in the international law department at Case Western Reserve University School of Law – ranked in the US as a top 10 international law programme – where he teaches an annual 13-week doctrinal course on international arbitration. In October 2016, Stephen was appointed for a six-year term to the panel of conciliators of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
Stephen has worked in more than 25 countries and represented clients in some 70 international arbitration proceedings, including arbitrations brought under more than 15 different investment treaties. He has represented the winning party in many of the largest international arbitrations in the world over the past 12 years. In June 2013, The American Lawyer Arbitration Scorecard published its list of the 20 largest commercial arbitration awards ever captured by the publication; Stephen represented the winning party in three of them.
In March 2016, Law360 ranked Stephen as one of the top 10 international arbitration lawyers under the age of 40. In February 2016, the National Law Journal named him one of the top 50 ADR lawyers. In June 2015, The American Lawyer gave Stephen the Arbitration Award at its inaugural Transatlantic Legal Awards dinner. In 2014 and 2015 he won the Client Choice Award from the International Law Office for the arbitration category in New York. In 2014, he was named in Crain’s Business “Forty under 40”.
