Jennifer Coplan is a global co-leader of Sidley’s technology and IP transactions practice. Jennifer’s practice focuses on intellectual property and technology matters, both transactional and counseling. She has extensive experience advising clients on complex cross-border and domestic transactions, including strategic joint ventures; content licensing and distribution; technology development, licensing and procurement; outsourcing and services arrangements; the protection and licensing of intellectual property; and the establishment and operation of internet-based businesses and services. She advises emerging and public companies – including in the media, software, hardware and financial services industries – on cutting-edge intellectual property issues and technology transactions.
Jennifer has deep experience advising clients on digital media-related matters involving the distribution of digital entertainment content. She regularly counsels leading international consumer electronics, technology and motion picture companies in connection with a variety of matters relating to legal, transactional and policy matters involving copyright, content protection and digital rights management. She has had an active role in many consortia and standards organisations involving the intersection of digital technology and entertainment media, including efforts relating to content protection for DVDs, Blu-ray discs, home networking technologies, digital television and UltraViolet.
Jennifer was named one of The Best Lawyers in America (2008–2017) for technology law. She has been recognised for her work by several other publications, including as a leading lawyer in The Legal 500 for Technology Transactions (2015–2016) and IAM Patent 1000 for Patent Transactions (2015). She is named an “IP Star” in Managing Intellectual Property – IP Handbook (2014–2015).
Jennifer received a JD from Yale Law School in 1993. A software engineer prior to attending law school, she has a BS degree in Computer Science from Tufts University, where she graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
