Trevor Soames is an experienced Brussels-based advocate, qualified as a barrister and solicitor- advocate, with over 25 years experience of complex competition/regulatory cases. His practice focuses on critical contentious cases covering the whole range of antitrust (mergers, dominance, state aid, cartels, IP/antitrust interface) in Europe and the USA.
Trevor can draw upon a wealth of experience across many global industries to assist clients and has a strong track record of success. Recent cases include representing Qualcomm, with Miguel Rato in the Commission’s investigation of an Article 102 complaint submitted by Icera; Hanjin in the Commission’s investigation of liner shipping pricing; the Legal Service of the European Commission in the hearing before the General Court of four appeals against the Commission’s decision to reject Article 102 complaints against De Beers Supplier of Choice and BVGD v Commission; Samsung Electronics in the European Commission’s investigation; Nokia, against a complaint lodged by Google; Syniverse, with Geert Goeteyn, in its proposed acquisition of MACH; a major international bank with regards to the LIBOR investigation; and Google/MMI.
His innovative work has regularly been recognised by the main legal directories, and his leadership of the team that successfully concluded the European Commission's Article 102 Qualcomm investigation won the Legal Business Competition Team of the Year Award for 2010. Other successes include the conclusion of the European Commission's Microsoft/Internet Explorer investigation; all charges being dropped against United in the Commission's Air Cargo investigation; and the unconditional clearance of the United Airlines/Continental Airlines merger.
Formerly co-chair of Howrey’s worldwide antitrust practice, Trevor is now happily focused entirely on client work and delivering successful outcomes, unburdened by management responsibility.
