Who's Who Legal Competition: Lawyers

Heather Irvine is an African antitrust expert, based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

She specialises in the notification of high-profile, complex merger transactions in South Africa and other African countries, including COMESA, particularly when there are challenging competition law or public interest issues.

Heather was involved in two of the first applications in cartel cases to South Africa’s Constitutional Court and has successfully defended clients against cartel charges in the fertiliser, plastic pipe, bitumen, wood products, retail cycling and glass industries. She has managed several dawn raids including in the cement, fertiliser, fire control and wood industries in South Africa and Zambia, and has successfully secured leniency for several of her clients in terms of the South African Competition Commission’s Corporate Leniency Policy. She has litigated complaints about abuse of dominance in the fertiliser, chemicals and communications industries. She also regularly acts for clients in the mobile telecommunications industry.

Heather led the Norton Rose Fulbright competition team until May 2016. In June 2016, she joined Falcon & Hume, a boutique commercial practice focused on mergers and acquisitions. Heather has been recognised by Global Competition Review as among the world’s top 40 under 40 competition lawyers, as well as one of the 100 most successful women in the field of competition law. She is a member of the International Bar Association’s antitrust committee, and a guest lecturer and external examiner for the University of the Witwatersrand.

WWL says: One of the foremost experts in Africa, Heather Irvine is “tremendously well respected across the Competition Bar”
