Timothy Bresnahan specialises in industrial organization, applied econometrics, and the economics of technology. His current research covers policy‐oriented topics such as competition in the personal computer business and the Internet, as well as technological and market sources of growth.

Professor Bresnahan has testified in numerous matters on issues of liability and damages in cases related to antitrust, competition, intellectual property, and product liability. He provided trial testimony in the bellwether consumer class action In re Whirlpool FrontLoading Washer Products Liability Litigation. He has coauthored several amicus briefs presented before the US Supreme Court.

In addition, Professor Bresnahan has served as the economic expert on a variety of mergers, including Sysco/US Foods, Google’s acquisitions of AdMob and ITA Software, Intel’s acquisition of McAfee, and CoStar’s acquisition of LoopNet. His international work includes a regulatory inquiry involving credit card fees charged by New Zealand’s four largest banks as well as testimony before DG Comp on mergers.

Professor Bresnahan served as deputy assistant attorney general and chief economist of the antitrust division of the US Department of Justice from 1999 to 2000. He has chaired Stanford University’s economics department and directed the Stanford Computer Industry Project. He is currently director of the Center on Employment and Economic Growth at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. Professor Bresnahan is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The author of over 100 scholarly publications, Professor Bresnahan was a founding editor, and is the current co-editor, of the Annual Review of Economics. He has also been an associate editor of the RAND Journal of Economics.

Professor Bresnahan studied at Princeton University (PhD, MA) and Haverford College (BA).
