Questions and Answers:

Who's Who Legal Thought Leaders Global Elite

The views expressed herein are those of the author and not necessarily the views of FTI Consulting, Inc, its management, its subsidiaries, its affiliates, or its other professionals.

Chris has spent over 35 years bringing economic and financial analysis to complex commercial, regulatory and legal problems. He is the former global head of FTI’s economic consulting business, and prior to this was the global head of Arthur Andersen’s economic and financial consulting business. He has testified multiple times in the UK’s domestic courts, in multiple arbitration forums, in the US tax court and before the Competition Appeals Tribunal. He has also advised regulators and regulated companies in the electricity, gas, media, post, rail, telecoms and water sectors.

Describe your career to date.

I was lucky to spend the early part of my career at Arthur Andersen, where I learned much of what I know about the importance of quality work, client focus and team building. Since then, first at LECG and then at FTI, I have tried to bring the same disciplines to bear on the work that we do.

What do you enjoy most about working as an arbitration expert witness?

The variety of issues, industries and contexts for the disputes that arise.

On what types of matters are you being called to give evidence most frequently at present?

The variety is still extraordinary. But recently there has been more work involving the mining industry, and more work involving Africa.

What effect does the increasing number of arbitral seats emerging around the globe have on the international arbitration market?

The market is increasingly global. It is very common to have multi-location legal teams, and multi-location expert teams.

What role do you see for London in the arbitration space post-Brexit?

I think London as an international arbitration centre is unlikely to be affected by Brexit (at least in the medium term).

How has the role of expert witness changed since you started practising?

The rise in international arbitration work is the most significant feature. Although the nature of the work is similar (whether in domestic litigation or international arbitration) the style of the hearings is quite different.

What is your proudest achievement to date?

Helping to build the finest international arbitration expert witness team in the world.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career as an expert witness?

Get a job at FTI.
