Who's Who Legal Competition: Lawyers

Olavo Chinaglia is a senior partner at Pereira Neto, Macedo Advogados. Recently recognised as one of Brazil’s most highly regarded competition/antitrust lawyers by Who’s Who Legal: Brazil (2016), Olavo has vast and solid experience in cases of cartel (e.g. ongoing investigations in the infrastructure/construction markets), unilateral conduct (e.g. refusals to deal in the market for airport security equipment) and merger control (counsel to GlaxoSmithKline in the USD23-billion merger with Novartis - GCR Matter of the Year in 2015).

Among other prominent clients, Olavo currently advises Medtronic, Philip Morris, Ifood, Latam Airlines, Mexichem, Laureate Universities, Shimano, Itron, Sherwin-Williams and OAS in a broad range of competition and antitrust matters.

He served for four years (August 2008 to August 2012) as a commissioner at the Brazilian Competition Authority (CADE), having acted as the agency’s interim president during the implementation of the Brazilian pre-merger notification system (as opposed to the post-merger notification system in force until May 2012). During his mandates, Chinaglia also represented Cade before the International Competition Network (ICN) and the competition committee of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Olavo graduated in 1997 and holds a doctorate in commercial law from the University of São Paulo (2008). He rendered over 100 lectures at seminars and conferences worldwide, in addition to having written several scientific papers and articles on competition, antitrust and corporate matters.

Olavo is also engaged in litigation cases (mostly follow-on damage lawsuits and challenges of CADE’s decisions before courts), as well as corporate integrity matters, aiming at the development, enhancement and maintenance of compliance programmes and training.

WWL says: The “terrific” Olavo Chinaglia is the first port of call for numerous clients who value his extensive and invaluable regulatory background.
