Biography:

Who's Who Legal Arbitration: Future Leaders - Partners

Mathias is a Rechtsanwalt in Germany and a solicitor in England and Wales; a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators; and a member of the German Arbitration Institution, the Austrian Arbitration Institution and the Swiss Arbitration Association. He is also listed at the Vienna International Arbitration Centre and the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration. Mathias handles all kinds of domestic and international arbitrations, with a focus on capital markets- and post-M&A.

A university lecturer on international arbitration, Mathias has published several articles and is a regular speaker on international arbitration. He was awarded the ILO Client Choice Award as Germany’s best litigation counsel twice. JUVE, the German legal directory, names Mathias as a frequently recommended dispute resolution expert.

Mathias has acted as: counsel for a German multinational in an ICC arbitration worth over €100 million relating to turnkey contracts for combined heat-and-power power plants in three different countries; counsel for Russian company in an SCC arbitration against German manufacturers under CISG/German law; counsel in post-M&A arbitration and parallel third-party expert proceedings, valued at over €100 million, concerning effective date accounts of target in petrochemical industry; counsel in post-M&A DIS arbitration, worth over €80 million, regarding divestiture of major subsidiary of a German multinational pharmaceutical company; presiding arbitrator in DIS post-M&A arbitration concerning divestiture of transportation business; counsel to European logistics company in a post-merger dispute under the DIS rules; counsel to Japanese company in proceedings to have London arbitration award be declared enforceable in Germany; and counsel to sickness funds in a €260 million dispute over establishing integrated care centres in DIS arbitration and parallel proceedings to have arbitration declared inadmissible in Germany.
