Who's Who Legal Trade & Customs: Lawyers

Sven De Knop is a litigator focused on European Union (EU) law and international trade law.

Sven represents clients in trade and other investigations before EU authorities, as well as in judicial proceedings before the EU and member state courts.

He has been involved in many of the major EU anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations in recent years, and regularly assists clients in investigations launched by third countries, including China, Egypt, India, Russia and Turkey. He also assists clients with white-collar crime and regulatory investigations and related compliance programmes, including in the areas of customs, and economic sanctions and export controls. In addition, he has extensive experience representing clients before the European Commission on issues relating to the regulation of biotechnology, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and waste.

Sven has extensive experience representing clients before the General Court of the European Union and before the Court of Justice of the European Union, particularly concerning market access and internal market issues. He further represents clients in certain member state litigation on issues such as product liability, other non-contractual liability, customs matters, and competition law.

Representative work includes: obtaining landmark victories before the Court of Justice of the European Union in anti-dumping and internal market matters; obtaining a landmark ruling from the Brussels Court of Appeals relating to non-contractual liability for violations of EU law; coordinating a pan-European litigation strategy for active litigation in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK; representing the world’s largest solar panel manufacturer in the biggest ever EU trade investigation and representing the world's largest steel manufacturer in the first ever Russian anti-dumping investigation; advising a major biotech company on EU emergency measures imposed on its food products; and assisting one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies during a GCP investigation.

WWL says: “A formidable expert trade lawyer with lots of experience. He is very responsive and a quick thinker."
