Who's Who Legal Arbitration: Expert Witnesses

Dr Chudozie Okongwu is a managing director and head of NERA’s European finance, litigation, and dispute resolution group. He has been retained in numerous matters in the areas of economics, finance, and valuation.

Dr Okongwu has provided expert evidence in venues including the High Court of Justice Chancery Division; the High Court of Justice Business and Property Courts of England and Wales (Technology and Construction Court); Southwark Crown Court; the High Court of Ireland; the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands; and US federal, state, and bankruptcy courts. He has testified in international arbitrations, including ICC, ICSID, SCC, UNCITRAL and ad hoc arbitrations, as well as in US domestic arbitrations.

Examples of Dr Okongwu’s work include: testifying on matters concerning the valuation, trading, and risk characteristics of a range of fixed income, equity, and derivatives products and bespoke financial structures; valuing companies and fixed assets in a variety of industries and countries; analysing consequences of the alleged mis-selling of financial products; analysing the effects of mis-marking of fund portfolios on investors; examining forced liquidation of securities positions; and providing valuations of terminated over-the-counter derivative positions. He has been retained on matters concerning allegations of market abuse. He has testified and consulted on subprime and structured finance securities matters.

Dr Okongwu contributed chapters to The Handbook of Mortgage-Backed Securities (Fabozzi, 2016), GAR’s Guide to Damages in International Arbitration (Trenor, 2017, 2018), and The Investment Treaty Arbitration Review (Legum, 2018). 

Prior to NERA, he was a member of Banque Paribas’s fixed income emerging markets team. He holds a PhD and an MA in economics from the University of California, Berkeley.
