Mr Chavez is one of the country’s leading litigators. His expertise includes alternate dispute resolution techniques, arbitration, mediation and negotiation.
His experience involves a wide variety of high-profile and complicated matters for major corporations, financial institutions and government. He is specialised in managing complex cases involving multiple claims and parties.
He contributes substantially to the other practice groups in the firm, being an expert in corporate law, M&A, insolvency and financial transactions.
He was educated at the Rafael Landivar University of Guatemala (attorney and notary public, 1975; procedural law programme, 1986); ESEADE (MBA, 1998).
Mr Chavez is the former managing partner of the law firm Beltranena, de la Cerda y Chavez, which merged with Carrillo y Asociados in 2009. He is the founding partner of Carrillo y Asociados.
He is a board member of many local organisations, and a former professor of procedural law at Rafael Landivar University, and a reviewer of several bills, including the General Procedural Code and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Law. He authored a thesis, The Letter of Credit, and is a member of many associations including the Guatemalan Bar Association, the Guatemalan Notarial Institute and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. He is a notary practitioner, and he speaks English.
