Who's Who Legal Nigeria - Capital Markets

Gbolahan Elias is a partner in the firm of G Elias & Co. He has advised on several of the most significant assignments for leading clients in recent Nigerian business law practice: distinguished mergers and acquisitions, innovative and complex financings and major critical disputes.

His mergers and acquisitions transactions have included leading deals in most sectors of the economy. Among these transactions are the sale to Kellogg of a 50 per cent interest in what is now Nigeria's largest food products business and the acquisition by Ntel of the old, government-controlled telephone monopoly.

He has also advised on innovative and complex bank financings in a variety of sectors (among them the pioneering AES Nigeria Barge IPP and the NNPC-Chevron gas-to-power project), and on a number of the most significant Nigerian capital markets offerings ever (among them, Nigeria’s largest equity offering and the largest bond offering respectively).

His most significant contentious work has included complex arbitration, defending a leading global multinational in an extensive series of 22 "bet-your-company" product liability court cases, and as a member of the team advising a leading telephone company in resisting the largest fine ever imposed in that sector.

He has been called to the Nigerian and New York bars and read law at Magdalen and Merton colleges in Oxford University, concluding with a doctorate degree.  He is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, the present chairman of the Lagos State Law Reform Commission and a member of the International Association of Defence Counsel.

He is also a much-sought-after speaker, a visiting professor of law at Babcock University and has many publications to his credit.

WWL says: Gbolahan Elias SAN is a widely respected figure in the field. He is described as “an excellent lawyer” by respondents, who commend his market-leading practice.
