Naval Satarawala Chopra is a partner in the New Delhi-based competition law practice of Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas. Naval is a leading competition law practitioner in India, counselling clients on contentious and non-contentious competition law matters. He is widely recognised for his expertise in abuse of dominance, cartel and merger control matters and is acclaimed for his thought leadership and key role in contentious matters and transactions alike. He regularly appears before the Competition Commission of India, the Competition Appellate Tribunal, and the Supreme Court of India.
In the antitrust field, he has represented clients including Microsoft, Facebook, National Stock Exchange, Aditya Birla Group and Uber. In relation to merger control, he has acted in many major national and multi-jurisdictional filings including Konecranes/Terex, Avago/Broadcom, Microsoft/Nokia, and Publicis/Omnicom, all of which were unconditionally cleared.
Naval was recently inducted by Global Competition Review in its list of the world’s top 40 competition lawyers under 40. He is recognised by Chambers & Partners 2015 as a “master strategist” who is known for his “ability to think out-of-the-box and find solutions by balancing the law and commercial considerations”. Naval is the author of the India chapter of the Global Antitrust and Competition Law Compliance Handbook.
Naval is qualified to practise in India, New York, England and Wales. He holds an LLB degree from ILS Law College, Pune, and LLM from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Before joining the Firm, Naval spent nearly five years as an associate in the India group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
