He has negotiated and drafted the full range of petroleum agreements and is recognised for his leadership in developing model contracts in the energy sector.

Tim has wide-ranging experience in various legal systems including the common law, civil law, shariah law and former communist legal systems. His business sector experience includes: energy, oil and gas, refining, petrochemicals, mining, infrastructure, construction, international trade and investment, regulatory and administrative law, compliance (anti-corruption, sanctions and boycott law), and finance and banking.

Tim has extensive experience as an arbitrator, mediator, expert and counsel, with particular expertise in the energy, oil and gas, project infrastructure and construction sectors. He has been a sole arbitrator, party-appointed arbitrator, institution-appointed arbitrator and tribunal chair in institutional and ad hoc international and domestic arbitrations. Tim has been counsel in a wide variety of arbitrations, transborder litigation, and boundary and sovereignty disputes. Governments and energy companies have retained Tim as an expert in a number of high-profile energy disputes and to provide strategic advice on how to manage their disputes.

Tim has developed, implemented and managed cutting-edge corporate compliance programmes on improper payments, trade sanctions, export controls and boycott law. He has advised governments, corporations and NGOs on corporate social responsibility, transparency and international compliance laws.

Tim is the chair of the Journal of World Energy Law & Business, the leading journal on international energy, published by Oxford University Press. He chairs the most recognised conference on energy disputes, co-organised annually with leading arbitration institutions around the world. Tim co-chairs the AIPN’s model international dispute resolution agreement committee and is a global faculty member at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy at the University of Dundee, Scotland.
