Dr Frank Röhling is a partner in Freshfields’ antitrust, competition and trade group, based in the Berlin office. He specialises in European, German and French competition law and his practice focuses on competition and regulatory matters at EU and national levels, advising on global merger reviews and investigations.
He has significant experience in advising clients from a range of industry sectors including media, automotive, pharma and chemicals in addition to clients from the financial and real estate sectors. Frank often acts for clients from regulated industries. In particular, he has significant expertise in advising private equity clients and is recognised as a leading competition law practitioner in the media sector.
Frank’s recent experience includes advising Axel Springer on various transactions, including the divestment of Axel Springer’s regional newspapers and numerous magazines to Funke Mediengruppe, as well as on general ongoing competition law matters; CME’s (Time Warner) TV stations in five European countries on all aspects of competition law; global private equity firms Advent International and Cinven on numerous transactions at the EU and national levels; and Daimler AG on its investment in Tognum.
Frank is a Rechtsanwalt qualified in Germany and is also qualified to practise as a French avocat. He completed his legal education in Germany, France and the UK and earned a Doctor of Laws degree (Dr iur) for his thesis on European merger control law. He spent six months respectively in the legal department at Nestlé’s headquarters and at Freshfields’ Paris office. Frank frequently publishes articles and lectures on competition law topics in German, French and English. As a German and French native speaker, Frank practises in German and French in addition to English.
