Ricardo Riesco is a partner of Philippi Prietocarrizosa & Uría and head of its competition group in Chile.
Ricardo has worked for Chile’s largest business conglomerates and international companies, and has been involved in many high-profile cases. His recent experience includes advising both Marriott International, Inc, and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc, in the proposed international merger of both companies; advising Fox International Channels in its proposed acquisition of CDF, Chile’s soccer channel; advising Freeport-McMoRan Chile in all of its competition matters; implementing compliance programmes for Grünenthal Chile, Beiersdorf Chile and L’Oréal Chile; representing the Chilean Ministry of Energy in a regulatory dispute against Metrogas before the Antitrust Tribunal; representing Enex/Shell in the successful leniency application in a cartel in the Chilean asphalt market; representing Enex/Shell in the merger clearance for its acquisition of Terpel, the first ever merger approved by the Supreme Court after having being rejected by the Antitrust Tribunal, and in the successful implementation of the probably largest mitigation measures ever imposed by the Chilean antitrust authorities; successfully representing John C Malone, president of Liberty Media Corporation, in a case brought by the economic prosecutor for the alleged breach of a mitigation measure of the Antitrust Tribunal; representing Canal 13 in the merger clearance for its acquisition of two radio companies and in the implementation of the new Digital TV Act; and representing Banco Santander-Chile in a case relating to the Chilean credit and debit card market.
Ricardo is the director of the Department of Civil Procedure at the Catholic University of Chile, director of the Chilean Institute of Civil Procedure, arbitrator of the Center of Arbitration of the Chamber of Commerce of Santiago and a member of the Competition Commission of the Chilean Bar Association.
Ricardo Riesco graduated from the Catholic University of Chile in 1998 and as a Fulbright scholar obtained an LLM at Columbia University in 2004.
