Professor Dr Karsten Metzlaff is a partner in Noerr’s antitrust & competition group in Berlin. He has specialised in antitrust law as well as franchising and distribution law for more than 16 years. Karsten is internationally recognised as one of the leading German competition and franchise lawyers.
Karsten advises on all areas of EU and Germany competition law with particular expertise in the manufacturing, media, pharmaceutical and retail sectors. Working with the EU Commission in Brussels for the Competition Directorate, his experience includes investigations, proceedings and complaints before the European Commission, the Federal Cartel Office and industry regulators.
Recent representations include ThyssenKrupp in antitrust issues in connection with the car steel cartel and on internal investigations in connection with compliance violations; Fresenius Helios on the €3.1 billion acquisition of 43 hospitals from Rhoen-Klinikum; cruise operator AIDA Cruises in various disputes concerning the alleged abuse of a dominant market position; a major wood-based panels manufacturers on FCO antitrust proceedings into alleged price fixing; and a leading premium and luxury group in the apparel market on reorganisation of its distribution system.
Karsten is recognised by Best Lawyers, Legal 500, Legal Media Group’s Guide to the World’s Leading Competition and Antitrust Lawyers/Economists, Who’s Who Legal in its competition and franchise sections, and Chambers Europe, being praised by clients for delivering “strong advice even in difficult circumstances”. Karsten is a member of the Antitrust Lawyers’ Association (Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht), the German Franchise Association and the International Bar Association. He was educated at the universities of Münster, Hamburg, Lausanne and London. Karsten contributes as a lecturer at the European University Viadrina and publishes frequently on competition law and distribution. Karsten speaks German, English, French and Spanish.
