Richard Gilbey is a founding partner of the Paris law firm Gilbey Legal, which specialises in intellectual and industrial property law.
It offers full services in these fields, from preliminary advice and clearance searches for trademarks, through filing and prosecution of trademarks and designs internationally, to enforcement, litigation and licensing aspects of trade marks, designs and copyright, including customs enforcement.
The practice includes representing French and foreign clients before the Community trademarks and designs registry, including representation up to the EU Courts of Justice EU. The firm also assists in trademark and trade dress regulatory, labelling and advertising issues, and domain names registration and disputes.
Richard is assisted by four avocats, all members of the Paris Bar (Jehan-Philippe Jacquey, Joanne Quirin, Richard Metzger and Arnaud Lellinger) as well as by a highly competent paralegal staff headed by Cécile Chabane.
Richard Gilbey is fully bilingual. He graduated in law from the Queen’s College, Oxford. After studying comparative law in France, he qualified as a solicitor in the UK where he practised for three years. He then obtained postgraduate degrees in European Community law and industrial property law from Strasbourg University. He spent two years as a researcher and teacher at the University of Strasbourg Intellectual Property Centre (CEIPI).
After seven years heading the trademarks and designs departments of life sciences companies Synthelabo and Sanofi, he set up Gilbey Legal in December 1992.
Richard Gilbey is a lecturer at the CEIPI Intellectual Property Centre of the University of Strasbourg.
Richard Gilbey is a frequent speaker at French and international trademark conferences (APRAM, INTA, PTMG, ECTA) and a member of the advisory board of the intellectual property department of Akron University, Ohio.
He has given seminars for AIPPI Japan and has had articles published in the AIPPI Japan Review.
