Antonio Martinez is the head of the competition and European law department at Allen & Overy Spain. He has over 20 years’ experience and is considered by leading directories as among the top competition law practitioners in Spain, and regularly quoted. Chambers Europe (Spain) 2015 states: “‘Eminently practical and flexible’ department head Antonio Martínez is extremely well recognised by the market.” Market commentators in the 2016 publication described him as "a good lawyer”.

Antonio has broad experience in advising international and domestic clients on all aspects of competition law. He focuses in particular on infringement and merger control proceedings both before the European Commission and the Spanish Competition Authority (CNMC).

Antonio has recently been involved in the defence of Google in the infringement proceedings opened by the European Commission in relation to certain alleged practices relating to the Android mobile operating system.

Other recent matters include advising Banco Sabadell on its filing to the European Commission in relation to its acquisition of TSB (COMP/M.7597) and OPTrust, PGGM and USS on their acquisition of Global Vía (COMP/M.7851). He has also represented 888 Holdings (case C/0686/15), Goldman Sachs/Redexis (case C/0630/14) and Yildirim Group in merger control filings to the CNMC.

He is representing Spanish public TV and radio broadcaster Corporación de Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) in its intervention in case C-449/P before the Court of Justice of the EU, having successfully represented the company before the General Court. Antonio is also advising collecting societies AGEDI/AIE in their appeal against a fining decision of the CNMC for an alleged abuse of dominance, and a multinational concrete producer in two different infringement proceedings opened by the CNMC.

He also has significant experience setting up competition law compliance programmes for Spanish and international corporations.

Companies Antonio has advised over the past year include Altadis, Azucarera (ABF Group), Beam Suntory, Boehringer Ingelheim España, DS Smith, DSV, Energya Villar Mir, Fox, GSK España, Hispasat, Huntsman, Janssen Cilag (Johnson & Johnson), Novartis, RTVE, Randstad, and Saria.

Antonio is the vice secretary general of the Spanish Association for the Study of European Law and a member of the board of directors of the Spanish Association for the Defence of Competition. He was a professor on the European Law master's degree course at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

Antonio is the author of numerous legal publications and co-author of the Comentario a la Ley15/2007, de 3 de julio, de Defensa de la Competencia, a reference book on competition law to which he contributed the chapter on infringement proceedings.

Antonio received a law degree from the Autonomous University of Madrid and holds a master's degree in European law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He is fluent in Spanish, English and French.
