Who's Who Legal Competition: Lawyers

Gabriel Castañeda founded Castañeda y Asociados, a Mexico City firm specialised in antitrust law, in 1995. Mr Castañeda served as the Federal Competition Commission’s inaugural executive secretary, in charge of law enforcement, until 1995. Prior to this, he was the legal director general of the economic deregulation unit at SECOFI, with direct involvement in the drafting or amendment of the Federal Law on Economic Competition, the Federal Law on Consumer Protection, the Federal Law on the Public Service of Electric Power, the Law on Commercial Corporations, the Law on Government Property, article 27 of the Constitution (land tenure), the Agrarian Law and the Organic Law of Agrarian Tribunals.

He has also worked at the Banco Nacional de Obras y Servicios Públicos and the law firm Goodrich, Dalton, Little & Riquelme. He has served as chair of the Mexican Bar Association antitrust committee, and vice chair of the American Bar Association international antitrust committee and the International Bar Association trade and antitrust committee. He served as drafter on the subcommittee on notifications and procedures of the International Competition Network merger committee. He has testified before the International Competition Policy advisory committee of the US, and acted as adviser to the World Bank in antitrust matters. He is a member of the ABA, the IBA and is a Fellow of the ABA.

Mr Castañeda is a law graduate of the Escuela Libre de Derecho and earned his master's degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has taught law courses at the Escuela Libre de Derecho and the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) in Mexico City.
