Biography:

Who's Who Legal Arbitration: Lawyers

Dr Inka Hanefeld, LLM is founding partner of Hanefeld, a dispute resolution boutique based in Hamburg, Germany.

Inka has acted as sole and co-arbitrator as well as president in more than 85 international and domestic arbitrations, both institutional (inter alia ICC, ICSID, SCC, DIS, VIAC, PCA, CEAC, GMAA) and ad hoc, including in large-scale energy, construction, post-M&A and finance disputes, as well as treaty-based investment arbitrations. Inka also enjoys an outstanding reputation as counsel. She has successfully protected the rights and interests of large listed companies before state courts and arbitral tribunals. In addition, she has acted as counsel for sovereign states and state entities. The exceptional quality of Inka’s work has been acknowledged in various national and international rankings.

In 2013, Inka was appointed to the panel of arbitrators at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) by the German government. In 2014, Inka was appointed Germany’s alternate member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and in 2015, she became vice-president of the ICC Court. She has also been a member of the LCIA Court since 2015.

Inka worked for several years in the dispute resolution department of a leading international law firm in Vienna, New York, Frankfurt and Hamburg before establishing her own private practice in 2005. She holds a Master of Laws in international legal studies (LLM) from New York University school of law and is admitted to the German and New York Bars. Her working languages are English and German.

Inka is a fellow lecturer at the New York University school of law (September 2012/2016) and lectured on domestic and international arbitration law at the University of Hamburg up until 2013. She is a member of the ICC commission on arbitration and ADR as well as of the former ICC task force on arbitration involving states or state entities.

Inka’s professional background goes hand in hand with the international focus and practice of Hanefeld. The unique background and experience of the firm’s lawyers ensures that clients benefit from a particularly profound knowledge and familiarity with the perspective of parties’ counsel, arbitrators and mediators, as well as that of arbitral institutions. Hanefeld’s expertise encompasses commercial and investment arbitration. In addition to representing parties before arbitral tribunals and state courts, all members of the firm regularly act as arbitrators or experts on German and international law. The firm also advises on specific procedural issues in arbitration proceedings, provides risk-assessment and strategic advice, and assists parties in enforcement proceedings either as lead-counsel or as co-counsel in cooperation with domestic and international law firms. Hanefeld’s clients include large and medium-sized companies from a variety of sectors and jurisdictions, together with state entities and sovereign states. In 2017, Hanefeld received the prestigious JUVE award Law Firm of the Year for dispute resolution in Germany.

WWL says: Inka Hanefeld is “an incredibly prepared arbitrator” highly sought after by clients who praise her “thorough and efficient approach”.
